La muchacha mala de la historia

Under the title “La muchacha mala de la historia”—a reference to the poem by María Emilia Cornejo—the work emerges as a symbolic device that challenges the boundaries between the sacred and the corporeal, proposing a critical rereading of Marian iconographies through a poetics of insubordination. The artist constructs a contemporary altar where the desiring and autonomous female body appears as the antagonist of the mandates of purity and obedience imposed by the feminist theory of marianismo. Through a video art piece that explores sexuality and desire from an embodied aesthetic, and intimate garments screen-printed with inscriptions such as “mala mujer” (“bad woman”) and “mala reputación” (“bad reputation”), the installation invokes genealogies of heretical, impure, and rebellious women. In this curatorial gesture, the languages of censorship are reclaimed and inverted into political potency and tribute: an altar to the dissident, the disruptive, the unrepentant.
